THANKSGIVING DAY HISTORY

THANKSGIVING DAY HISTORY

This is the story of a group formed by 102 people who had to leave England because they were scared of the Church of England and they were very hungry. These people were called PILGRIMS.
They decided  to travel to the American continent .They wanted to live better than they did in England.
They were travelling for 66 days. During the trip many people died . Only 52 people arrived in America.

They arrived in a city which was called Plymouth. It was a  part of a new state called New England.
INDIANS from America accepted pilgrims and helped them. Indians taught pilgrims to cultivate new plants and take care of animals to survive.
They arrived in America in November and that winter was very hard. It was very  cold. Some pilgrims died but the rest of them learnt how to live.
The  Pilgrims were very happy and thankful to the Indians and they decided to say thank you to them. They decided to invite the Indians to have lunch with them  eating all the food they had  from their animals and their plants during the winter.
So they celebrated a great lunch.
Nowadays this is still celebrated in the USA and Canada.
In the United States it is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Families meet around a great lunch and they are happy to do it. It’s a very important holiday there.

The typical food this day is roast turkey and pumpkin pie.

Esther Blancas.
